About us
The NEST projec is proudly funded by the Center for the Promotion of Science (https://www.cpn.edu.rs), a public institution established by the Ministry of Science, Technological Development, and Innovation of the Republic of Serbia. his funding comes as part of the second Public Call for Citizen Scientific Research Projects for 2024. The project is led by a team of four scientists from the Maize Research Institute in Zemun Polje, the project holder institution, along with two scientists from the Institute for Plant Protection and the Environment. This collaborative scientific team boasts an impressive history of successful partnerships on both domestic and international research initiatives. Their expertise is evidenced by a proven track record in publishing work related to sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, and the breeding and seed production of agricultural crops.
The project coordinator is a scientist of the Agroecology and Cropping Practices group, bringing over 20 years of experience in diverse agricultural methods, particularly in seed production and processing. The expertise of the Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje team in the plant biology, conservation and management of plant genetic resources will be invaluable for project activities related to the identification, description, and knowledge dissemination of old agricultural plant varieties.
The team members of the Institute for Plant Protection and Environment have achieved a lot in the field of quality, health, conservation, and seed production research. Engaged scientists will help connect researchers, citizen volunteers, and women farmers and raise public awareness of the value of agro-biodiversity conservation.
The involvement of the Association of Plant Breeders and Seed Producers of the Republic of Serbia in NEST will help ensure the project's sustainability beyond its official conclusion, thanks to the dedicated volunteer efforts of researchers and community members. Our commitment extends beyond scientific inquiry; we aim to translate our findings into real-world applications. By promoting science and emphasizing the crucial need to preserve agro-biodiversity, we will enhance opportunities for the establishment of sustainable small farms.
