Our mission

It is estimated that the world has lost 75% of edible plant species over the past century. Consequently, our current food system relies on a limited number of cultivated species, making it highly vulnerable. Biological diversity enhances the chances of finding varieties that can adapt to various climates and resist specific diseases, thereby helping to ensure food security.

  1. The NEST aims to enhance connections between farmers and scientific research institutions that maintain ex situ collections of diverse agricultural species. Additionally, it seeks to revitalize the cultivation of these species in the gardens of our dedicated agricultural producers.
  2. To ensure the preservation of old seeds, active management is essential. This makes it crucial for us to unite agricultural producers, gardeners, enthusiasts, and devotees of old varieties who are eager to share their knowledge, seeds, and cultural heritage stories with present and future generations.
  3. We aim to direct them toward the institutions they can contact and collaborate with to obtain seeds, ensuring they are collected and stored properly for the next sowing season while preserving the authenticity and identity of the variety.
  4. The focus is on old varieties that have been developed through natural, spontaneous crossing. Some of these varieties carry rich family histories, while others can be made into delicious and nutritious meals for the family.
  5. Food is not merely a basic necessity; it serves as a natural remedy for many health issues that afflict modern society. Thus, it’s not sufficient to simply be informed; action must also be taken.
  6. We invite you to join us in celebrating the revival of old varieties in our gardens. Together, we can enjoy the benefits of these heritage plants for our well-being, our families, and future generations.
