SEED PRODUCTION OF THE NOVI SAD WINTER WHEAT VARIETIES

MIŠIĆ, T., SAVIĆ, S., ČOBANOVIĆ, M., LJUBIČIĆ, M., ĐURĐEVIĆ ĐURĐICA and DAMLJANOVIĆ, S.

SUMMARY

The provision of sufficient quantities of quality seeds is the main target of the program of improvement of production of winter wheat in Yugoslavia. Since 1970, Yugoslav science has achieved considerable results in the field of wheat breeding and growing and by that period, the production and marketing of the seeds of the Novi Sad wheat varieties of different technological quality and maturity significantly increased and have met increasing domestic and foreign demands (Tables 1, 2 and 3; Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6). Parallelly with rapid spread of the Novi Sad wheat varieties on the Yugoslav market, the Institute of Field and vegetable Crops from Novi Sad closely cooperates, through “Semenarstvo”, with companies engaged in seed production, processing and marketing. A new period comes in improving general level of seed production of the Novi Sad wheat varieties in Yugoslavia which will clear the way for new industry branch. In the period from 1971 do 1992, 2.245,795 t of certified seeds of the Novi Sad winter wheat varieties were produced and marketed in Yugoslavia.

THE EFECT OF SEED WEIGHT AND THE SEED PROTEIN CONTENT ON SOME MORPHOLOGICAL TRAITS OF WINTER WHEAT SEEDLINGS

LOMOVIĆ, S., ĐOKIĆ, D., JELIĆ, M., ĐOKIĆ, A. and OGNJANOVIĆ, R.

SUMMARY

The effect of the seed weight and the seed protein content on the some morphological traits of eight winter wheat cultivars studied. The seed from each cultivar was divided into the four groups by the seed size: very large>3.0 mm, large>2.8 mm, medium large>2.5 mm and small>2.2 mm. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions with 4 replications, during 1990-1991. The planting was carried out in the pots with sterilized sand. The plants were harvested at the third leaf stage. The seedlings were divided on the roots and the shoots. The positive correlation between the seed protein content and shoot: rot ratio was found. Length of roots was negatively correlated with the seed protein content. The positive correlation was found between the seedling and the seed weight and the seed protein quantity.

ROLE OF GENETICS IN CREATION OF HIGH YIELDING PLANT CULTIVARS AND INCREASING OF FOOD PRODUCTION

DOKIĆ, A. and MIHALJEV, I.

SUMMARY

Since genetics plays the most important role in creation of new plant cultivars achievements of genetics research which have been important for developing new plant breeding methods and techniques (hybridization, mutation, polyploidy, ,,in vitro” culture, chromosomal and genetic engineering) are reviewed in this paper. By applying different plant breeding methods and techniques in Yugoslavia in last 30 years were created 1170 varieties and hybrids of agricultural species (wheat 205, barley 54, corn 429, sugar beet 27, sunflower 23, soybeans 23, potato 20, forage crops 84, vegetable 106, fruit 50, grape 31). Introduction of new created high-yielding cultivars into agricultural practice contributed to increasing of average yields for 3, 4 or more times, and consequently increased food production. The genetic potential for yield reached in: wheat 10,0 t/ha, corn 20,0 t/ha, sugar beet 120,0 t/ha, sunflower 6,0 t/ha, soybeans 5,0 t/ha etc. Regarding these achievements it is defined the next step goal in breeding particular agricultural species. Finally, it was concluded that in plant breeding were obtained excellent results, that there were possibilities for better using of genetic potential for yield of new created cultivars, and that by applying new breeding methods and techniques, and by using wild species as source of new desirable genes more extensively breeding programs it would be possible to make further progress in creation of new high yielding cultivars.

PRODUCTIVITY OF THE FACULTATIVE WHEAT VARIETY ZEMUNKA 1 FALL AND SPRING SOWN

ĐOKIĆ, A.

SUMMARY

This paper discusses the results of a study of the facultative wheat variety Zemunka 1 and its resistance follow temperatures under cold chamber (-15°C) and field conditions. The results of the percentage of ear-bearing plants from fall sowing are analyzed and yields from both fall and spring sowing are compared to those achieved with standard varieties.

Based on the results obtained the wheat variety Zemunka 1 can be considered highly resistant to low temperatures, producing a significant number of ears even from late spring sowing dates. Therefore, irrespective of the sowing date, fall-and spring-sown, significantly high yields of the variety analyzed have been recorded.

YIELD AND QUALITY OF SEED FRACTION

OF NEW WINTER WHEAT CULTIVARS

IVANOSKI M. and MLADENOVSKI T.

SUMMARY

The investigation was carried out with three seed fractions of sieve (2,8; 2,5 and 2,2 mm). In the laboratory conditions were studied, total seed germination, length of rootlets, first leaves, and dry mater of its were measured on 14 days old plants. A field trial was set up with three seed fractions, and from the obtained results it can be concluded:

It was not found a significant difference between seed fractions for total seed germination. But it was found significant higher grain yield for the cultivars Orovčanka, Radika, Skopjanka, Nova Skopjanka and Lihnida for seed fractions of 2,8 and 2,5 mm to relation of 2,2 mm.

For this cultivars, there is not recommend to use 2,2 mm seed fraction for sowing. For the cultivars Milenka, Babuna, Lizinka, Treska and the Line SK-35/88 it was not found significant difference between seed fraction. That means for this cultivars, in optimal sowing conditions it can be used for sown in all three seed fractions.

POSSIBILITY OF LONG TIME STORAGE OF PEPPER SEED

ILIĆ, Z.

Duration and quality of storage of pepper seed depends on the complex of biological and agroecological conditions in the curse of production and storage. After five years of storage of pepper seed at -18°C, in relation to initial germination, it was best saved by means of packing in Al and PE bags with 85.2%, and most badly bu packing in paper bags (72.18%). It was similarly with the energy of germination, the value of which in relation to initial one (71.2%) was best saved at packing in Al bags, with 64.5%, then in PE bags with 60.0%and most badly in paper bags with 22.1 %. Satisfactory results at such method of storage of pepper seed may be obtained, if the seed has high biological value, total moisture content lower than 6% and without presence of pathogens.

EFFECT OF TIME OF SEEDING AND PLANTING ON WINTER SPENDING AND YIELD OF CELERY SEED (Apium graveolens L.)

DAMJANOYIĆ M. MARKOVIĆ Z, ZDRAVKOVIĆ JASMINA and STEVANOVIĆ D.

SUMMARY

During three years the effect of time of seeding and planting on winter spending and yield of celery seed has been investigated. Two seeding and planting dates have been investigated. By earlier seeding and planting in the autumn higher number of vernalized plants is realized but also a bigger danger of freezing, which may be often complete. By growing of seedlings during the winter in glasshouses and plastic houses without additional heating and by planting in early spring higher and safer yields of celery seeds are achieved.

EFFECT OF ROW DISTANCE OF PATENT COMPONENTS AND STAND DENSITY ON THE YIELD OF HYBRID MAIZE SEED

MARINKOVIĆ B., STARČEVIĆ LJ., CRNOBARAC J. and SVETLANA BALAŠEVIĆ

SUMMARY

The effect of the distance of pollinating plants from the ,,mother" plants on the yield of maize seed was studied with two row-to-row distances (70 and 50 cm) and five stands. In years plentiful with rain, stand density had higher effect on seed yield. Increased stand density affected the yield increased up to 10.085 kg·ha-1 (50 cm). The yield difference between the 1st and 2nd mother row ranger from 387 to 649 kg·ha-1 and depended on rain deficit. The yield difference between the 2nd and 3rd row ranged from 115 to 620 kg·ha-1 (row-to-row distance of 70 cm). With row-to-row distance of 50 cm these differences ranged from 157 to 772 kg·ha-1, and from 233 to 240 kg·ha-1, respectively.

COMPLEX PROTECTION AND STORAGE OF CORN SEED

KLOKOČAR ŠMIT ZLATA, INĐIĆ DUŠANKA and OBROVIĆ BRANKA

SUMMARY

The classical blotter test, Hiltner-Gassner vigor modified test and cold tests were employed to determine the effect of fungicide-insecticide joint application on the quality of hybrids ZPTC 200 and ZPSC 704 during storage.

Tefluthrine product Force 20 CS at the dosages 100 and 300 in combination with thiram had no adverse effect on germination of ZPTC 200 hybrid seed during storage. Thiram (Tiram Zupa TS, 300 ml) in combination with 500 g/100 kg of FORCE 20 CS decreased the emergence only immediately after treatment, and in combination with Posse ST-25 (carbosulfan) at 4000 g/100 kg of seed, decreased the vigor in Hiltner-Gassner modified test and slowed down development of seedlings roots immediately and after and 6 and 12 months later.

Combined fungicide Ferax (flutriafol, thiabendazole and ethirimol) was insufficiently effective in control of high incidence of Fusarium spp. on ZPTC 200 seed. The combination with carbosulfan reduced the relative value number at 0,6 and 12 months check and total emergence in ,,cold test" after 6 and 12 months of storage. Tefluthrin at highest dosage combined with Ferax reduced the vigor immediately after treatment.

Vigor test revealed negative effect of joint carbosulfan - mancozeb application on hybrid ZPSC 704 expressed as reduction of vigor, relative value number and extension of emergence. At the same time, the reduction of total emergence in ,,cold test" was noticed.

The importance of vigor test in assessing effects of chemical treatment has been demonstrated, and the need for information on insecticide-fungicide joint action on seed of different maturity groups and type of corn hybrids endosperm has been pointed out.

EFFECT OF SEED MOISTURE AT HARVEST ON GERMINATION

AND VIGOR OF SOYBEAN

PRIJIĆ, LJ.M.

SUMMARY

Study was conducted during three years in order to determine the changes in soybean seed germination and vigor due to seed manipulations at harvest and conditioning. Harvest was done when the seed moisture was 9, 11, 13 and 16%. The seed with 13% and 16% moisture was dried to 11%. The control variants were hand harvested in the same time and with the same seed moisture as combine harvested soybean. The germination was evaluated by the standard warm test and vigor by the tetrazolium test. Seed coat damage was evaluated by the sodium hypo-chlorite test. The lowest seed germination was at harvest with 16% moisture. The TZ test showed significant decrease in seed vigor after harvest and conditioning, especially for extremely low seed moisture. The highest level of splits was when the seed moisture was 9%.

THE ANALYSIS OF ZP MAIZE HYBRID SEED PRODUCTION IN BANAT IN 1993

PAVLOV M. and ĐUKANOVIĆ LANA

SUMMARY

Only graded seed with high germination enables excellent harvest, uniform emergence and rapid early growth. Therefore, plots with the highest soil fertility and appliance of complete cropping practices are chosen in order to produce seed. However, there are factors with almost no human influences, such as temperatures, precipitation and relative air humidity.

EFFECT OF STRAIN AND SUBSTRATE ON DEVELOPMENT OF OYSTER

MUSHROOM SPAWN

BUGARSKI DUŠANKA, GVOZDENOVIĆ, D. and TAKAČ A.

SUMMARY

Due to increased production of oyster mushroom, a great attention has been paid to the factors directly affecting its yield. One of the most important factors is quality of spawn. In 1993-94. the quality of spawn of the fungus pleurotus ostreatus, strains NS-16 and H-7, was tested on different media (wheat, wheat + sawdust, millet, millet + sawdust, triticale and oats) in the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops, Vegetable Department.

The strain NS-16 produced the mycelium of beast quality on media of millet and millet + sawdust, while wheat and wheat + millet media were poorer media for mycelium production but still acceptable for commercial production. The media of triticale and oats were unsatisfactory for commercial production. The strain H-7 had the mycelium of best quality on the media millet + sawdust and wheat + sawdust. The media of millet and wheat gave weaker but still quality mycelia. The media of triticale and oats were not acceptable of commercial production.
